🐝SPELLING 🐝 BEE

What is a Spelling Bee?

A spelling bee is a sign contest originating in the United States, it is a very important tradition. These events go beyond spelling, revealing stories of tenacity, overcoming and illusion.

Beginning in the 19th century.

They have their roots in the 19th century, with the first documented competitions in the mid-1800s. These events were organized in schools and local communities as a way to promote education and highlight the importance of spelling and grammar in effective communication.

National consolidation

As the country moved into the 20th century, spelling bees became established as national events. The National Spelling Bee was established in 1925, making it the most iconic event of its kind. Organized by Scripps Howard, this contest has brought together the best spellers from across the United States, providing a platform to highlight the talent and skill of young students.

National Spelling Bee Success

It has grown in popularity over the years, attracting the attention of the press, sponsors and, of course, the public. The competition has become a televised event, capturing the attention of viewers across the country.

Today, Spelling Bees are taking place all over the world.

But why are they called Spelling Bees?

Yes, bee is bee, but it also has another meaning. Bee can refer to a social event, a gathering of people who come together for a particular purpose. For example: quilting bee (a group that gets together to make a quilt), sewing bee (a group that gets together to sew), spelling bee (a group that gets together to… read). However, it is not a term that can be applied to any gathering, it is only used at certain times, such as those mentioned above.

SPELLING BEE LA RAMBLA

The Spelling Bee of CEIP La Rambla is born in the academic year 2020-2021 to, through the game, encourage the motivation of students towards the English language. Other objectives to be pursued are:

  • To learn the alphabet in English.
  • To improve the ability to sign words in English.
  • To support the learning of the lexical content of the level: vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation.
  • Develop confidence and oral presentation skills.
  • To work on concentration skills.
  • Enhance the development of self-esteem.
  • A cultural activity from an English-speaking country is valued.

In addition, since 2022-23 other centers in the province have wanted to join this experience, thus creating the Intercenter Spelling Bee. A great opportunity to work with other schools, exchange impressions and ideas on the teaching of English among teachers and culminate with the Grand Final: a day of fellowship and brotherhood with students from other centers with the practice of English as a common thread.
