My swimming experience

¡¡Enhorabuena, Martina!!

My history with swimming goes back to when I was three years old, and no further than courses to learn how to swim. At first. I didn’t have a great affinity for water. But as time went on. The teachers saw a special talent in me. They recommended I try out for a swimming club to continue progressing and so I did.

I joined the Top Ten Swimming Club at age 11, under the tutelage of my coach Josemi, where three disciplines are practised: lifesaving (beach and pool), finswimming, and swimming as we know it (we call it “classic”).

All these modalities are exciting, and they have in common they requirement of two-three hours of daily training to reach optimal conditions for the regional and national championships; strict minimum times are required to participate. There are many types of tests, both individual and collective, and the competitiveness is very high, as is the companionship. Getting on the podium is wonderful, but it is not always achieved.

To be able to face all these sporting commitments (trainings, competitions, etc), and, of course, academic ones as well, it is essential to be organised and very disciplined.

The most enriching experience is to participate in the Spanish Championships by Autonomous Communities, since that means that you have been selected to represent your Autonomous Community, always based on your results.

Recently, the lifesaving championship in Sanxenxo (Galicia) took place for over three days. The Valencian lifesaving team was represented by twelve male and twelve female swimmers of various categories. During this time, the experience was fantastic, and I had lots of fun, always trying to reduce the pressure of defencing your Autonomous Community after hundreds of hours training. Finally, our Autonomous Community emerged as a fair winner, and the most rewarding thing of all was not the medals I won, but the experience I was lucky enough to live.

Martina Orts, 3ºE
