ARE YOU A SUPERSTITIOUS PERSON?

A lot of people in Britain believe in superstitions, mostly older people. Superstitions are irrational beliefs, especially with regards to the unknown, so they are not based on scientific theories. Some of these British superstitions are similar to the Spanish ones but some are quite different.

First of all, let us have a look at good luck superstitions. The most common one may be the clover plant with four leaves. Another one is the horseshoe, but it must be the right way up to be lucky. Also, it is said that if the first words you state the first day of the month are “white rabbits, white rabbits, white rabbits”, you’ll be really lucky throughout the month.

However, there are some other superstitions which are said to bring bad luck. One of the most outstanding examples is that breaking a mirror will bring seven unlucky years. You will also be unlucky if you open an umbrella indoors. Moreover, you have to be careful when you buy a new pair of shoes because if you put them on the table, you will be unlucky.

To sum up, there are several superstitions which are known all over the world, but there some others which are different because they depend on cultural issues. For instance, black cats mean bad luck in Spain meanwhile in Great Britain they are featured on many good luck greeting cards and birthday cards. Which superstitions are well-known in your country?
