Historia libre de una escuela
Una mirada a los orígenes y evolución de la FPA Presentación Sáez
Éste no es un relato oficial ni una crónica cerrada. Es la historia que hemos vivido desde dentro. La historia de cómo nuestra escuela nació entre muros, creció con esfuerzo colectivo y se convirtió en un referente dentro de un lugar donde la educación significa mucho más que aprobar exámenes.
El centro penitenciario de Valencia, hoy llamado Antoni Asunción Hernández, fue inaugurado en 1991, aunque comenzó a funcionar en 1990. Desde sus primeros días, la escuela del centro empezó a tomar forma y a desempeñar un papel activo en la vida penitenciaria. Existían aquí dos escuelas ya que el centro penitenciario no era uno solo como es hoy en día, sino que eran dos: centro de cumplimiento y centro de penados.
En aquel entonces, las escuelas en prisiones formaban parte integral del sistema penitenciario. El profesorado pertenecía a un cuerpo específico de docentes adscritos a Instituciones Penitenciarias, bajo la dependencia del Ministerio del Interior y Justicia.
Tras un largo proceso de negociaciones y convenios entre ambos ministerios —con la implicación directa del profesorado, entre quienes destacaba Presentación Sáez, maestra con una amplia trayectoria en centros penitenciarios femeninos desde los años 70—, se logró transferir las competencias educativas al Ministerio de Educación. Poco después, estas pasaron a las Comunidades Autónomas.
En nuestro caso (la dos escuelas que existían entonces), fue en el año 2000 cuando nos integramos en el cuerpo de maestros de la Conselleria de Educación de la Generalitat Valenciana. A partir de ese momento, comenzó un ilusionante proceso de transformación: construir una escuela con competencias y funcionamiento equiparables al de cualquier otro centro educativo del exterior. En honor a nuestra compañera Presentación Sáez, ya fallecida, dimos nombre a nuestra recién nacida escuela de cumplimiento: FPA Presentación Sáez.
En el año 2021, ambas escuelas se fusionaron en una sola. Desde entonces, no hemos dejado de evolucionar. Ampliamos nuestra oferta educativa, incorporamos la Educación Secundaria, la preparación para las pruebas de acceso a la UNED, y un variado abanico de actividades complementarias: música, creación artística, inglés, informática, deporte, yoga… También somos tribunal de la Junta Qualificadora de Valencià, participamos en proyectos Erasmus+, publicamos la revista Reixa Oberta, contamos con página web y llevamos a cabo múltiples iniciativas que aportan frescura y motivación a la vida dentro del centro.
Muchos docentes han pasado por nuestras aulas desde aquellos inicios. Algunas caras cambiaron, pero se mantuvo algo fundamental: el espíritu emprendedor, el enfoque humano y el convencimiento de que la educación tiene sentido también —y sobre todo— en este contexto.
Hoy, la FPA Presentación Sáez no solo es una escuela reconocida dentro de la institución penitenciaria. Es un espacio donde se construyen oportunidades, donde se dignifica el tiempo, y donde la educación se vive como un derecho, no como un privilegio.
No es una historia perfecta, ni completa. Pero es la nuestra. Y sigue escribiéndose.

A Free History of a School
A Look at the Origins and Evolution of FPA Presentación Sáez
This is not an official account or a closed chronicle. It is a story we have lived from within. The story of how our school was born between walls, grew through collective effort, and became a point of reference in a place where education means far more than passing exams.
The Valencia prison, called Antoni Asunción Hernández, was inaugurated in 1991, though it began operating in 1990. From its earliest days, the school within began to take shape and to play an active role in prison life. At that time, there were two schools, because the penitentiary was not a single institution as it is today, but two: Cumplimiento (originally for inmates with a sentence) and Preventivos (for inmates without) .
Back then, the schools in prisons formed an integral part of the penitentiary system. Teachers belonged to a specific body of educators assigned to the Prison Administration, under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior and Justice.
After a long process of negotiations and agreements between the two ministries, educational responsibilities were successfully transferred to the Ministry of Education. Shortly afterwards, they passed to the Autonomous Communities. The teaching staff were involved in the process, among whom Presentación Sáez stood out, a teacher with extensive experience in women’s prisons since the 1970
In our case (the two schools that existed then), it was in the year 2000 that we joined the teaching staff of the Department of Education of the Valencian Regional Government. From that moment, an inspiring process of transformation began: building a school with responsibilities and operations comparable to any other educational centre outside the prison. In honour of our colleague Presentación Sáez, now deceased, we named our newly established school FPA Presentación Sáez.
In 2021, two adult schools were merged into one. One of them was FPA Presentación Sáez. The other one was FPA Número 3. Since then, we have not stopped evolving. We expanded our educational provision, added Secondary Education, preparation for the UNED entrance exams, and a wide range of complementary activities: music, artistic creation, English, computing, sports, yoga… We also serve as an examining board for the official JQCV Catalan language tests, and participate in Erasmus+ projects, publish the school magazine Reixa Oberta , maintain our website, and carry out numerous initiatives that bring freshness and motivation to life within the school.
Many teachers have passed through our classrooms since those early days. Some faces changed, but something essential remained: an entrepreneurial spirit, a human-centred approach, and the conviction that education has meaning here as well—and above all.
Today, FPA Presentación Sáez is not only a recognised school within the penitentiary institution. It is a space where opportunities are built, where time is dignified, and where education is experienced as a right, not a privilege.
It is not a perfect or complete story. But it is ours. And it continues to be written.
