A child today consumes more sugar in a single year than our grandparents consumed in their entire lives. Some of our children bring sweets for lunch every day: desserts, chocolate, pastries, and other unhealthy products.
Ultra-processed lunches, loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, harm children’s health and contribute to lifelong problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. They can also contribute to nervousness, hyperactivity, and insomnia, among other issues.
Therefore, even though there are only a few days of school left, we ask that you carefully review what your children bring for lunch and, looking ahead to next year, prioritize healthier options such as fruit, sandwiches, or fresh, nutritious foods. Take advantage of the summer to teach them to eat healthy. They are not old enough to decide what they eat.
Today’s diet determines tomorrow’s health.
