👑 This February -Black History Month in the US- we’ve discovered Jean-Michel Basquiat, a New York-born artist who revolutionized art with his vibrant colors, symbols, words, and powerful messages.
Basquiat began painting graffiti on the streets under the tag SAMO, and little by little, he developed a very personal style, full of energy and emotion. What caught our attention the most were his symbols (like the crown), his expressive characters, and how he mixed text and image to talk about identity, inequality, and power.
In class, we created two final pieces:
🎨 A graffiti artwork using spray paint, after practicing two types of typography: bubble letters and block letters. It was so much fun to experiment with color, shape, and the strength of each stroke!
🦖 And another creation using mixed media, where we included some of Basquiat’s most iconic symbols, like the crown, the dinosaur, skulls, words, arrows, and human silhouettes.
We’ve learned that art can also be a cry, an emotion, a way to tell who we are and how we see the world.
