The Hidden Gem of Bucharest
The IES Número 26 of Valencia is taking part in the Erasmus+ programme with its project REDES (European Teaching References in Secondary Education).
Teachers from IES Número 26, Raúl Gálvez (Drawing Department) and Javier Bataller (Mathematics Department), carried out a mobility within the school’s Erasmus+ KA101 project in Bucharest, Romania, where they experienced daily life at Scoala Gimnaziala No. 49 from December 5 to 9, 2022.
This was a job-shadowing activity with the main objectives of observing the host school’s operations; fostering cooperation and the exchange of ideas among European teachers; analysing the teaching and management of foreign languages; identifying similarities and differences in science teaching approaches; and learning about other projects and methodologies that could be implemented in everyday classroom practice. All these goals align with the general objectives of the REDES project.
Located in District 2 of Bucharest, within the Iancului neighbourhood, this school truly proved to be a hidden gem that we were fortunate to discover—with students who inspired our admiration and teachers who offered us an exceptional welcome. The school offers two educational levels: primary (ages 6 to 10) and lower secondary (ages 11 to 14), distributed across 47 classes (22 in primary and 25 in secondary). Due to high demand, the nearly 1,200 students attend in three different shifts to ensure everyone has a place.
During our stay, we participated in 14 lessons covering almost all grade levels alongside 14 different teachers. We attended classes in mathematics, art, computer science, civic education, French, English, history, physics, and biology. We were treated to a theatrical performance illustrating key moments in Romanian history, followed by a tasting of typical local sweets. We would also like to express our gratitude to the entire faculty of Scoala Gimnaziala No. 49 for their involvement in organizing our visit. In addition to welcoming us into their classrooms, some teachers kindly accompanied us in their free time to visit Bucharest’s historic centre, the Parliament, and the National Art Museum.
Regarding the Romanian education system, several aspects are worth highlighting:
At the end of 8th grade (equivalent to our 2nd year of ESO), before entering high school (liceu), students must take a standardized exam in Romanian language and mathematics. The results determine their ranking and influence their preference when choosing a liceu. Scoala Gimnaziala No. 49 is among the top-performing schools in Bucharest in these examinations.
Expelling a student from school is strictly prohibited. The most severe sanction, if the interventions of the tutor and family fail, is the loss of the behaviour grade, which also affects the final score on the aforementioned exam used for liceu placement.
The school principal heads a council composed of nine members, including teachers and parent representatives. The principal performs the roles that would correspond in Spain to both the head of school and the head of studies.
In daily life, we noted several remarkable aspects:
- The outstanding level of English among students, especially in the lower grades. In fact, whenever classes were taught in Romanian, a student translator would interpret for us into English.
- The well-equipped classrooms featuring glass boards for notes and diagrams, as well as digital whiteboards used for projecting e-books, showing videos, or conducting interactive activities. Some classrooms were also equipped with student laptops.
- The high level of student participation and respect.
- The dynamism with which lessons were conducted.
- The active involvement of families, as volunteer parents took part in programming and computer science classes.

La joia amagada de Bucarest
L’IES Número 26 de València participa en el programa Erasmus+ amb el seu projecte REDES (Referents Europeus de Docència en Educació Secundària).
Els professors de l’I.E.S. Número 26, Raúl Gálvez (departament de dibuix) i Javier Bataller (departament de matemàtiques) van realitzar una mobilitat, dins del projecte Erasmus+ KA101 del centre, a Bucarest, Romania, on van estar vivint el dia a dia de la Scoala Gimnaziala nº 49 del 5 al 9 de desembre de 2022.
Es va tractar d’un job shadowing que tenia per objectius principals observar el funcionament del centre d’acollida, fomentar la cooperació i l’intercanvi d’idees entre els docents europeus, observar com es tracta i gestiona l’ensenyament de llengües estrangeres, trobar similituds i diferències quant a l’enfocament de l’ensenyament de les ciències i conéixer altres projectes i metodologies que es puguen implementar en el dia a dia de la pràctica docent. Tots aquests objectius estan emmarcats dins dels generals del projecte REDES.
Al districte 2 de Bucarest, dins del barri de Iancului, està situada aquesta joia que nosaltres vam tindre la sort de descobrir, amb un alumnat que va despertar la nostra enveja i uns docents que ens vam acollir de forma immillorable. S’imparteixen dos nivells d’ensenyament: primària (de 6 a 10 anys) i secundària (d’11 a 14 anys) distribuïts en 47 classes (22 a primària i 25 a secundària). Donada la gran demanda que té aquesta escola es fan tres torns perquè els quasi 1200 estudiants tinguen el seu lloc.
Allí vam participar en 14 classes de pràcticament tots els cursos presents a l’escola amb 14 docents
diferents. Vam presenciar classe de matemàtiques, dibuix, informàtica, educació cívica, francés, anglés, història, física i biologia. Ens vam oferir un teatre amb els moments més importants de la història de Romania seguit d’una degustació de dolços típics. També agrair la implicació de tot el claustre de l’Scoala Gimnaziala nº 49 en l’organització de la nostra visita, ja que a més d’acollir-nos dins de les seues aules, en el seu temps lliure professors i professores de l’escola ens vam acompanyar a veure el centre històric de Bucarest, el Parlament i el Museu Nacional d’Art.
Pel que respecta al sistema educatiu romanés destacaríem les següents dades:
– El gran nivell d’anglés de l’alumnat, especialment dels cursos inferiors. De fet, quan la classe era en romanés, comptàvem amb un o una estudiant que feia la traducció al valencià o a l’anglés.
– L’equipament de les aules, que disposaven de pissarra de vidre per a anotacions i esquemes, i de pissarra digital per a projectar llibres digitals, vídeos o jocs interactius. Algunes classes també comptaven amb ordinadors portàtils per a l’alumnat.
– L’alt nivell de participació i respecte de l’alumnat.
– El dinamisme amb què es desenvolupaven les classes.
– La implicació de les famílies, ja que mares i pares voluntaris col·laboraven en les classes de programació i informàtica.
