In 1986, the Regional Ministry of Education (Conselleria d’Educació) launched an Adult Education Programme (EPA) and authorised the creation of a Municipal Adult Education Circle. In Oliva, this first centre had two teachers appointed by the Conselleria on temporary secondment, several teachers hired by the Town Council, and a number of instructors. The centre was located in the former CEIP Desemparats school building (now the Sant Vicent Social Centre).
In 1990, the municipal centre was officially recognised as the Joanot Martorell Adult Education Centre. At that time, the Oliva Town Council announced three permanent teaching positions. Both the Municipal Adult Education Circle and later the Joanot Martorell Adult Education Centre issued School Leaving Certificates to their students from their creation until the full implementation of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO).
In the year 2000, the centre was authorised as a Secondary Adult Education Centre, and the teaching staff was completed with three secondary education teachers. Initially, these positions were temporary, but from 2006 onwards they became permanent posts.
The following year, by decision of the Conselleria, the teaching staff had to be divided between those employed by the Town Council, who continued to form the Joanot Martorell Adult Education Centre, and those dependent on the Conselleria. The latter went on to establish the Serafí de Centelles Adult Education and Training Centre from 2013 onwards and began to teach, among others, courses from Training Programme A, which lead to the official Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) qualification.
At present, both centres share the same building, located at the beginning of Avenida Jaime I, and together they offer a wide range of training and leisure courses to the people of Oliva.
