MICROALGAE Project

The Microalgae Project is a collaborative network generated by the teachers’ interested in the cultivation of microalgae, their uses and how to adapt this challenge in the classroom, using active methodologies and introducing digital technologies in the process. The idea comes from the pioneering centre IES DR. Peset Aleixandre, with six more schools joining as:

  • IES Virgen del Remedio (Alicante)
  • CIPFP Batoi (Alcoi)
  • IES La Melva (Elda)
  • IES Gonzalo Anaya (Xirivella)
  • CIPFP Blasco Ibánez (Valencia)
  • IES Alto Palancia (Segorbe)

This project involves Vocational Training teachers from the Chemistry, Safety and Environment, Health, Computer Systems and Applications and Agriculture families, as well as secondary school teachers specialising in Physics and Chemistry and Technology.
They are working on the design and manufacture of an automated microalgae cultivation plant, looking for different applications such as water purification, the manufacture of a nutritional supplement or incorporation into a cosmetic product.
It is a multidisciplinary project where all the teaching staff contribute their vision of the challenge and work on it in the classroom, through challenge-based learning.

On 20 November, a conference was organised between IES Dr. Peset Aleixandre and the Advanced Digital Innovation Centre (CIDA), in which the participants of the collaborative network had talks from colleagues about the cultivation of microalgae and its digitalisation. At the end of the day, they participated in a talk and workshop given by AINIA Technology Centre.
